Most Common and Easily Correctable Casting Errors
Casting Error
Correction
Starting the cast with slack in the line. When this is done, your cast is doomed from the get-go. Line speed cannot be achieved.
You cannot begin to load the rod until the fly begins to move. So you must start with no slack in the line.
Roll cast forward to straighten your line and leave the tip of your rod almost touching the water in front of you. Then begin lifting, slowly at first and accelerate rapidly at the very end of your stroke, stopping sharply before you pause and begin the forward stroke.
Breaking the wrist on the backcast. When this is done, the tip of the rod points more horizontally to the ground and any line speed that has been achieved is lost.
On backcast, bend your wrist back no farther than to form a 45 degree angle between the butt of the rod and your forearm. One way to do this in practice, to get the feel, is to put the butt of your rod inside the cuff of your long sleeved shirt.

Rule of thumb
Keep the fly in the water
Longer casts are not necessary to catch fish, but a long cast keeps your fly in the water longer, allowing more time for the fish to see your fly.
Loop-to-loop connection
If you use the loop-to-loop connection for your tippet, after you tie your tippet on, tie a loop in the end of your tippet spool, , then your have it all ready to go when you want to change your tippet. Just pull out the length of tippet material and cut it to use. This is especially useful when fishing at night.
Watch your cast
That is the best way to see if you have smooth line and proper loops.
